Story of a family and their passion
At the origin of Sikelia Sail (2008) is our family. Antonino, Cesare (Antonino’s dad), Maria (Antonino’s mum) and our collaborators.
I have always dreamed of making this marvelous stretch of sea in southern Sicily known. I grew up on the coast, in the western part of the island, in a family passionate about sea life and with great love and respect for their territory and its traditions. After completing my studies, I used my first earnings to buy a rubber boat and explore the rest of Sicily even further. It was then that I discovered that my great passion could become the job of my life.
Cesare (Antonino’s dad) is a seadog who joins him with equal passion in this wonderful adventure; Maria (Antonino’s mom), the chef, prepares the magnificent dishes served on board and on special occasions organised by the great Sikelia family.
Together with them, Anna has been dedicated to following the work and projects of Sikelia Sail for several years. Combining her extensive experience at sea and in office environments, she is well-equipped to take on various roles within the organization. This includes leading excursions and managing administrative duties.
Elena is passionate about art, the sea, and our beautiful Sicily. She is another precious team member known for her friendliness and kindness towards anyone approaching our infopoint. She enthusiastically offers helpful advice on excursions, local products, and exploring the Sicilian territory.
Why Sikelia
We chose to name ourselves Sikelia after the ancient name of Sicily, because we love this land of contrasts and colours, its character forged by the many civilizations who have lived here, and its corners of unspoilt nature; the beauty and transparency of its seabeds truly are the envy of the world.
The name Sikelia, meaning ‘Land of abundance’ in Greek, was what the Greeks called the island when they arrived in Sicily in 756 BC. At that time, the island was inhabited by the Siculi (Sikeloi). The Greeks founded the colonies of Agrigento, Syracuse, Milazzo, and Zancle (now Messina) and were among the first peoples to shape the character of this land. They were later followed by Arabs, Normans, and Spaniards, who also left their mark, further enriching its artistic and cultural heritage. Would you like to discover this treasure with us?
Marzamemi: beaches, hotels, restaurants
We are located in Marzamemi (Sicily), a small fishing village further south than Tunis. Marzamemi is strategically positioned: just a few kilometers from the Late Baroque wonders of the Val di Noto, such as Ortigia, Noto, Ragusa Ibla, Modica and Scicli. It’s nestled in one of the most beautiful stretches of coast on the island. From the calm waters of this natural port, we set off on our excursions to explore the most fascinating seascapes and bays with the clearest waters.
